June 14th - Sports

I’m a sports fan and enjoy watching a variety of sporting events, however there are some great sports out there that that we rarely if ever get to watch. So here is a list of my top 6 non-mainstream sports.

*Main stream sports include; Basketball, Football, Baseball, Soccer, Boxing, MMA, Soccer, Hockey, Auto Racing, Tennis and Golf as it is easy to find these sporting events on television or at least highlights on ESPN almost any day during their seasons.

The Six coolest non-mainstream sports…

1. Rugby

Now I’ll admit this sport is pretty much mainstream for Australia and the UK, but its really hard to find here in the US. I don’t understand all of the rules but the game does interest me and on the rare occasions I do see it on TV I will take the time to watch it for awhile.

2. Curling

The sport we only see during the winter Olympics, when it is usually being ridiculed…. However I think its an interesting watch and a game I would like to learn how to play. Actually I remember on my aunts computer she used to have this weird little curling game, it was pretty lame but I remember playing it (and not fully understanding the rules on there either) just because it was curling.

3. The Skeleton

Another Winter Olympic event (and I’m not even a big fan of the winter Olympics) in this sport you lie flat on your back on a little sled and race down a hill at speeds up to around 80 miles per hour, this sounds crazy and fun to me. I guess I will consider the street luge in as this too because it’s the same thing only on pavement.

4. Cheese Rolling

This is a once a year event at Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth England, what started as a local sporting event now draws people from around the world… So what is this sporting event? Well they have a really steep hill and they have cheese…. So they get some of their famous Double Gloucester cheese and throw it down the hill and chase it like mad men/women… they run the event in several heats of twenty now that it has become so popular… first one down the slope wins the cheese! This is actually a really dangerous sport has numerous ambulances are in attendance to take people to the hospital from their falls down the hill.

5. Chess Boxing

Two men enter the ring in an 11 round fight to the end… the winner walks out a chess boxing champion… the sport combines brawn & brain with 5 three minute boxing rounds and 6 chess rounds. You win by one of three ways… knock out you opponent, checkmate your opponent, or make your opponent run out of time on their chess clock (probably because you gave them a concussion and it takes a little longer to plan out that next move?)

6. National Rock Paper Scissors Championship

The game we all know as kids, and use as adults to solve simple disputes in a “best out of three” contest actually has a national championship. I have seen it on TV even and it was an interesting event as some of the contestants really get into it and dress up in costumes and everything.

And as an honorable mention… Afghanistan’s national sport, which is just to bizarre / somewhat disturbing to include as a “cool/interesting sport” Buzkashi… It’s like polo… only they use a decapitated goad as the ball… and no I’m not making this up. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/farrey/011011.html = ESPN comparing Buzkashi to the NFL….
